Oppenheimer: Olivia Thirlby joins the ensemble cast of Christopher Nolan’s new film

As soon as you thought Christopher Nolan was done casting actors for his upcoming film Oppenheimer, we hear that Olivia Thirlby is joining the ensemble cast. Thirlby’s credits include contributions to Y: The Last Man and Showtime‘s The L Word: Generation Q. She’s also appeared in films like Juno, United 93, The Wedding Ringer, White Orchard, and more.

Thirlby joins an A-list cast that already includes Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Emily Blunt, Josh Hartnett, Matt Damon, Jason Clarke, David Dastmalchian, Robert Downey Jr., Kenneth Branagh, Matthias Schweighöfer, and Cillian Murphy. Murphy stars in the title role as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the scientist who ran the Manhattan Project that led to the invention of the atomic bomb.

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie will be the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since 2020’s Tenet. The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. In addition to directing the feature, Nolan will also write the script and produce alongside Emma Thomas and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven. Oppenheimer is set to explode in theaters on July 23, 2023, roughly two weeks before the anniversary of dropping the bomb on Hiroshima.
