Palm Springs breaks Hulu streaming record with biggest opening weekend

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Max Barbakow's time loop romantic-comedy PALM SPRINGS, is breaking records on Hulu. Starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti, the film broke the streaming platform's opening weekend record by gaining more views over its first three days than any other film on Hulu during the same period.

Launching on July 10, the film also generated the highest amount of social interest for any Hulu original film to date over its premiere weekend, and it was the most discussed Hulu original film on Twitter over its first three days. These latest feats for PALM SPRINGS are the latest history-making moments for the acclaimed comedy. The film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January and sold to Hulu and Neon for just over $17.5 million, making it the biggest deal in the history of the Park City-set festival. This beat out the previous record of $17.5 million that was paid by Searchlight Pictures for Nate Parker's THE BIRTH OF A NATION at the 2016 festival.

PALM SPRINGS continues the impressive streaming run that Hulu has had with films on the platform. The online launch of Bong Joon Ho's PARASITE became the most-streamed independent or foreign-language film among all titles available on Hulu in its first week of availability. PARASITE also became the second most-watched movie overall on Hulu ever among titles currently available to stream after its first week of release.

PALM SPRINGS, which is one of the most acclaimed releases of 2020 with a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, follows carefree Nyles (Andy Samberg) and reluctant maid of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti) who has a chance encounter at a Palm Springs wedding. Things get complicated as they are unable to escape the venue, themselves, or each other. The film also stars Peter Gallagher, Camila Mendes, and J.K. Simmons.
