The Platinum Dunes debate is one of the most popular among genre fans. Are they spot-on producers or are they ruining the genre? This issue could go back and forth for hours among most horror fans… Personally I’m all for Platinum Dunes. I actually had the pleasure of meeting Brad Fuller and Andrew Form while on the FRIDAY THE 13TH set and these guys are undoubtedly fans of the genre. Regardless of what some fans think they’re not just making these flicks for a chunk of change… They actually care about the final product… though people will argue those actual products prove otherwise. Like I said… this debate is endless…
But regardless the fact is Platinum Dunes do happen to make a decent chunk of change. The trio of Fuller, Form and Michael Bay have nearly a dozen producing credits between finished products and upcoming releases… and now they’ve caught the attention of a major studio. According to Variety Platinum Dunes just signed a ‘first-look pact’ with Paramount Pictures, which means the producing banner will get first dibs on Paramount’s low-budget genre scripts. Bay had the following to say:
“We offer a valuable service to the studio, especially with all this turmoil going on in the business right now, in that we do things cheaply, and we’ve had a lot of success with it. Through the first two ‘Transformers’ films, I’ve gotten to know the studio very well, and I’ve got a good rhythm with them. I’m excited about this.”
The first films due up to come from this pact are THE BUTCHERHOUSE CHRONICLES, described as THE BREAKFAST CLUB in a haunted house, and PROPERTY OF STATE, about a young white-collar criminal whose attempt to straighten out his life is imperiled by an obsessive and menacing parole officer. As is the case with PROPERT OF STATE, thanks to this deal Platinum Dunes are planning on branching into the low budget action business as well as our beloved horror. Fuller adds on the action films: “The key is making them at a low budget.”
Now neither BUTCHERHOUSE or PROPERTY will be happening anytime soon considering Dunes are currently hard at work on A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET followed by FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2. As always we’ll be keeping you updated on whatever Platinum Dunes have up their sleeves!
