The House of the Devil (watch it HERE) and The Innkeepers (watch it HERE) director Ti West‘s new horror film X just had its premiere at the SXSW film festival, and earlier this morning our own JimmyO gave the film an 8/10 review that you can read at THIS LINK. Now it turns out that X is actually the first installment in a franchise, and the next entry has already been filmed! Our friends at Bloody Disgusting report that after the premiere screening of X, West unveiled the teaser trailer for a prequel called Pearl!

JimmyO marked this next bit information as a “slight SPOILER in his review”, so read the rest of this article at your own risk…

As mentioned in that review, cast member Mia Goth plays two roles in X. Not only is she porn star Maxine, she also plays an elderly woman named Pearl. She reprises the role of Pearl for this prequel, which was filmed in secret in New Zealand.

While X is set in 1979, Bloody Disgusting’s Meagan Navarro says that

Pearl rewinds even further to 1918. Because it’s a prequel, to describe the trailer might spoil some of X‘s surprises. But it looks even more insane than X, and the trailer teases that it’s “coming soon.”

Written and directed by West, Pearl is currently in post-production. The film was produced by A24, Jacob Jaffke, Harrison Kreiss and Kevin Turen, with Goth, Dennis Cummings, Sam Levinson, Ashley Levinson, Karina Manashil, Scott Mescudi, and Peter Phok serving as executive producers.

We’ll let you know when a release date for Pearl is announced. In the meantime, X is set to reach theatres this Friday, March 18th.

X has the following synopsis:

In 1979, a group of young filmmakers set out to make an adult film in rural Texas, but when their reclusive, elderly hosts catch them in the act, the cast find themselves fighting for their lives.

Goth (A Cure for Wellness) stars alongside Brittany Snow (Would You Rather), Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi (Bill & Ted Face the Music), Jenna Ortega (the new Scream movie), Martin Henderson (The Strangers: Prey at Night), Owen Campbell (Super Dark Times), and Stephen Ure (Deathgasm).

Are you excited for X, and are you surprised they already made a prequel called Pearl?
