Pirates 5 early reactions say we can expect a pirate flag-waving good time

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

With a summer filled with potential mega hits coming our way it’ll be hard for all the films to stand above the rest as the mega of the mega. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES does stand tall among the pack, however, seeing as how it will reunite fans with Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. But will it be a welcome return? The movie screened for critics, journalists and industry insiders last night at Cinema Con, and word is we can expect an exciting sea-faring voyage with the eccentric pirate.

Our own Paul Shirey was in the crowd, and though the movie didn’t exactly justify its existence with him he still had a merry-ol’ time with the pic:

“Fun” seems to be the operative feeling coming out of the movie, as others like Fandango’s Erik Davis and Slash Film’s Peter Sciretta had a good time time with the Disney flick:

However, swashbuckling ain’t for everyone…

That escalated quickly. Anyway, the reactions seem pretty consistent across the board, with all compasses pointing towards an action-packed summer blockbuster that is able to redeem the other films, which weren’t as well-received as the first. Some of the reactions also hint this will be the most emotional of the bunch, a surprising element that even I wasn’t expecting.

I’ll have to wait to see it for myself before I have any firm opinions on the flick, but I’m glad people are digging it for the most part. The last thing this world needs is another sub-par PIRATES movie, so luckily this is at least enjoyable enough to overlook any flaws it could have. Directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg seem to have enfused new life into the series, so if it does well this may not be the last time we see supernatural pirates shenanigans. And if you know anything about me it’s that I love my supernatural pirates shenanigans.

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MEN TELL NO TALES arrives May 26.
