A little less than a month ago we gave you all an update on this alleged PLANET OF THE APES prequel. That update had the film’s title changing to CAESAR and pretty much shattered any sort of ‘remake’ talk people might have still been partaking in. This thing is going to be a full prequel folks!
Well that’s all fine and dandy, but when is this thing starting up?! Why this July, that’s when! The news comes from Production Weekly:
20th Century Fox have opened production offices at Mammoth Studios in Burnaby, BC with a planned July start for Planet of the Apes: Caesar, the forthcoming prequel to the Tim Burton directed remake that will be helmed by Rupert Wyatt.
So this shite is going to be a prequel to Tim Burton’s film and not the original. Is there much of a difference? Unfortunately we still don’t know much about PLANET OF THE APES: CAESAR but if we pool together what we do know we get the following:
‘Caesar’ refers to the genetically altered leader of the simian rebellion, so dubbed because the ape was capable of grand strategic thinking on par with Julius Caesar. The ‘Caesar’ code name also foreshadowed the script’s plot: Like the actual Julius Caesar, the ape begins a (wait for it … ) guerrilla war and emerges the emperor of the known world.
Milo, better known as Caesar, is the son of talking chimpanzees Cornelius and Zira, in the Planet of the Apes movie series. He is the leader (and chief instigator) of the ape revolution in the fourth entry, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and the ruler of Ape City in the fifth and final film, Battle for the Planet of the Apes. He was portrayed in both movies by actor Roddy McDowall, who had also played Cornelius.
I’m pretty sure we can get a good idea of what to expect with PLANET OF THE APES: CAESAR from those details. So what do you guys think? The fact that this thing is going full prequel and not treading on ‘re-imagining’ garbage has got to help it’s chances, right?
Rupert Wyatt starts production on PLANET OF THE APES: CAESAR from a script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver this July! That’s only a couple months away people so hopefully we get some casting news soon! As always be sure to keep it here for updates as we hear them.
