I ended last week telling you about one of my favorite directors in Richard Kelly and now I’m starting the week telling you about another: Darren Aronofsky! Today The Hollywood Reporter have an update on a long-standing Aronofsky project called BLACK SWAN.

Now truth be told I haven’t even heard of BLACK SWAN but color me intrigued. Then again anything from Darren Aronofsky has me intrigued, especially the ROBOCOP reboot! Which I’ll get too… First up though: BLACK SWAN. It seems the project has new life thanks to a gorgeous actress now attached… Natalie Portman!

Natalie Portman… in a Darren Aronofsky movie… Oh I’m there! I’m there with bells and whistles on my shoes! And I haven’t even gotten to the plot yet! BLACK SWAN is described as supernatural thriller set in the world of New York City ballet. Here’s the full synopsis: SWAN is about a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it’s unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.

Don’t look now but I think I just got a little too excited… Alright, all joking aside this movie is shaping up quite nicely! I’m already sold and the only name we’ve got attached to star is Portman! Imagine who else they can score for this one? Before we cap this one off let me give you the details. BLACK SWAN was set up at Universal way back in 2007 before it hit a bunch of snags and has been shopped around with a lot of interest. Portman’s involvement has really peaked that interest. Mike Medavoy’s Phoenix Pictures and Aronofsky’s Protozoa Pictures are producing with John McLaughlin’s original script getting a rewrite by Protozoa’s development exec Mark Heyman while the movie was in limbo. BLACK SWAN’s script has been described as ‘a spine-tingler’ and it’s been compared to THE OTHERS.

Now Aronofsky is apparently still attached to the ROBOCOP reboot but that’s only in development and is currently looking at a 2011 release date… which gives Aronofsky plenty of time to get to work on BLACK SWAN… as early as this year! That’s all we’ve got for now but keep it here as we await more on BLACK SWAN.
