The Shudder streaming service just announced at the Television Critics Association convention that they’re teaming up with Bryan Fuller, creator of the Hannibal television series, for a four-part documentary series called Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror. This series will be released through Shudder sometime in the summer of 2022.

TV Tango got their hands on the following information:

Executive produced by Bryan Fuller, QUEER FOR FEAR is a four-part documentary that delves into the history of queer people in the thriller genre. From its literary origins with queer authors Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Oscar Wilde to the pansy craze of the 1920s that greatly informed Universal Monsters and Hitchcock, through the “lavender scare” alien invasion films of the mid-20th century and the AIDS obsessed bloodletting of 80s vampire films, QUEER FOR FEAR explores the role of the LGBTQ+ community in front of and behind the camera making the movies that thrill us. Through this rainbow lens, we will re-examine genre stories not as violent, murderous narratives, but as tales of survival that resonate thematically with queer audiences everywhere.

The show’s contributors will include producer Steak House of Steakhaus Productions, visual artist / Attack of the Queerwolf podcast co-host Nay Bever, comedian Lea DeLaria, Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce, and more. The listed contributors all joined Fuller on a Queer for Fear panel at the TCA show today.

During the panel, Fuller confirmed that Hannibal will be covered on this documentary series. An entertainment editor in attendance quoted him as saying, “We were warming up to the gay themes on Hannibal. NBC allowed us to tell the story we wanted to tell. If we had gone on longer it would have been much more explicit.”

Shudder also unveiled a logo for the series, which you can see right here:
