I wish every superhero actor would express as much enthusiasm for their respective characters as Jason Momoa does for Lobo. DC‘s “Last Czarnian” has never been my favorite antihero. Still, Momoa brings an energy to the role that makes me want to give him another shot when he joins Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El in this summer’s hottest superhero film, Supergirl. Recently, Momoa spoke to Comicbook.com about playing the Main Man in DC’s upcoming film and, in addition to hinting at the character’s future, said he needs audiences’ help convincing the studio to greenlight an R-rated Lobo solo film.
Momoa on DC’s Main Main going solo
“I have asked. And they do have some plans,” Momoa told Comicbook. “If I’m allowed to release anything, I would just probably say that much. Aquaman, you know, came out with a little splash of him in Batman v. Superman, Justice League was pretty big, and then Aquaman. So I think it’ll be a slow release.”
“We’ll see where he fits, and then it would be amazing to do our own solo [movie],” he added. “But the audience really has to, like, love him and want to be there.”
When asked about developing an R-rated Lobo movie for DC, Momoa said, “It has to be [R-rated], but you’ve also got to build the fan base for that. You can’t just drop that in there and expect everybody to come in,” he said. “You got to watch it. You got to warm them up. I don’t want to say anything yet.”
My idea for an R-rated Lobo movie
If DC is willing to make a Clayface movie, Lobo’s chances of getting an R-rated solo film are relatively high, provided fans support the project. Obviously, the fan support needs to be evident. After all, DC movies cost millions of dollars to produce, and the studio won’t bother unless they’re convinced there’s an appetite for the character. If I were DC, I would see how fans react to Lobo in Supergirl, then, if the room is warm, set up a writers’ room to craft a story revolving around Lobo and his daughter, Crush. In the comics, Lobo has literally hundreds of illegitimate children spread out across the cosmos. He only found out about Crush through The Other, an enemy of the Teen Titans. An R-rated father-daughter action comedy featuring Lobo and Crush could be awesome on the silver screen. Cut the check, DC! I’ll even help you write it!
