If you plan to experience the first part of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon in theaters, a road trip could be in your future. Rebel Moon: Part One: A Child of Fire is getting a special 70mm theatrical release in select cities. The limited-time event runs from December 15-21 at the following locations: Los Angeles (Egyptian Theatre), New York City (Paris Theater), Toronto (TIFF Bell Lightbox), and London (Prince Charles Cinema). Rebel Moon then comes to Netflix on December 22.

While I prefer the comfort of my living room to a theater for most movies debuting after the pandemic, Snyder’s loyal fans could leap at the opportunity to see Rebel Moon on the silver screen in a sweet 70mm format. There’s nothing quite like seeing an anticipated film in cinemas, and Snyder is doing everything he can to make this year-end event something to remember. Thankfully, Snyder plans to go all-out for Rebel Moon, with a sequel, board game, and animated series in the works.

Here’s the official logline for Rebel Moon: “When a peaceful colony on the edge of a galaxy finds itself threatened by the armies of a tyrannical ruling force, Kora (Sofia Boutella), a mysterious stranger living among the villagers, becomes their best hope for survival. Tasked with finding trained fighters who will unite with her in making an impossible stand against the Mother World, Kora assembles a small band of warriors — outsiders, insurgents, peasants and orphans of war from different worlds who share a common need for redemption and revenge. As the shadow of an entire Realm bears down on the unlikeliest of moons, a battle over the fate of a galaxy is waged, and in the process, a new army of heroes is formed.“

Zack Snyder directs from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad. Cleopatra Coleman, Sofia Boutella, and Charlie Hunnam star alongside Cary Elwes, Anthony Hopkins, Jena Malone, Corey Stoll, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Stuart Martin, Ray Fisher, and more.

According to Netflix, Ed Skrein plays Admiral Atticus Noble, a nefarious Imperium enforcer. Sofia Boutella plays Kora, an Imperium deserter who leaves the peaceful Veldt to fight back. Charlie Hunnam plays Kai, a mercenary pilot whose Tawau-Class freighter will prove invaluable to Kora’s quest. Michiel Huisman plays Gunnar, a Veldt farmer who knows little of the galaxy outside of his small, quiet corner of the universe. Djimon Hounsou plays General Titus, a hardened gladiator who once served the Imperium.

Staz Nair plays Tarak, a noble indentured servant who shares a bond with a flying creature called a Bennu. Doona Bae plays Nemesis, a cyborg sword master whose mechanical hands allow her to wield molten-metal weapons. Ray Fisher plays Darrian Bloodaxe, an insurgent harrying the Imperium with guerilla attacks. E. Duffy plays Milius, a refugee who seeks justice for their home — a colony that has already fallen to the Mother World. Anthony Hopkins plays “Jimmy,” an ancient robot knight who once defended a slain king but has now faded into a more peaceful existence.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire will be released on Netflix on December 22nd, followed by Rebel Moon: Part Two – The Scargiver on April 19, 2024.
