When one big studio film packs up and moves, a bunch of smaller ones will scramble to take its place. Such a domino effect happened over the weekend when the latest Scorcese/DiCaprio collaboration got “mysteriously” pushed back.
Paramount moved SHUTTER ISLAND from an early October date to mid-February 2010, in an effort to “maximize our overall success”. Whatever THAT means, unless it’s codeword for “DAMN! That film is SO bad we have to reshoot”. But then again, it’s a Scorcese film, can it really be that bad?
Sony Pictures then stepped up ZOMBIELAND one week to the emptier October 2nd slot. The horror comedy will thus benefit a full month’s release before catching a second wind on Halloween. Up against it will be Drew Barrymore’s rollergril film WHIP IT, also moving from the same October 9th slot.
And finally but not necessarily related, Wes Anderson’s THE FANTASTIC MR. FOX will get a wide release on Thanksgiving weekend, November 25th, after a limited run from November 13th.
