Take this as a rumor until we get confirmation from more sources, but fansite EXBlog is reporting that Bulgarian news outlets have re-confirmed that Mel Gibson will be playing the main villain in THE EXPENDABLES 3. The interesting note is they also confirm that Steven Seagal will be joining Wesley Snipes, Jackie Chan, Nicolas Cage, Milla Jovovich and the rest of Sylvester Stallone‘s crew for the latest chapter in the action franchise.

Seagal memorably played the bad guy in MACHETE for Robert Rodriguez, a role that Mel Gibson will also partake in the upcoming MACHETE KILLS. If this turns out to be true, this would mark Seagal’s first theatrical release since MACHETE. I like the prospect of adding these stars to the movie but it also is sounding a bit like X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. Are they cramming too many actors into the movie?

The blog is also reporting that the screenplay for THE EXPENDABLES 3 is being rewritten to account for the bevvy of new characters, which hopefully means they are being included as substantial roles and not just another Chuck Norris/Deus Ex Machina part like in the second film.

I like THE EXPENDABLES series as pure mindless fun. While Stallone and Schwarzenegger seem to be floundering in their movies outside of this series, it is nice to know they can always come back and kick some ass.
