When Andrew Lincoln and his character Rick Grimes departed The Walking Dead in the midst of season 9, the original plan was that we would see Rick again in a trilogy of theatrically-released feature films. That plan changed, and back in July it was announced that Lincoln will be reprising the role of Rick in a mini-series that will reunite him with his The Walking Dead co-star Danai Gurira, playing Rick’s significant other Michonne. (Who followed him out of the series during season 10.) Self has just published an article about Gurira’s career, and in that write-up is had been revealed that Gurira co-created the Rick and Michonne mini-series and is working on the show as a writer!

Consisting of six episodes, the new mini-series will present an “epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?

Gurira is working on the Rick and Michonne mini-series with Scott M. Gimple, Chief Content Officer of the Walking Dead Universe. Self spoke with Gimple about their collaboration, and he told them,

She challenges me, I challenge her, and neither one of us lets the other off the hook. In life, I’m more a character actor; Danai is a lead. When we’re working, when we’re pitching, when we’re just dealing with life stuff—it’s a good combo.” Describing Gurira as “incredibly creatively ambitious,” Gimple adds, “[Danai] wants to do new, signature work—stuff that isn’t out there currently. She doesn’t want to settle in any way. It’s the best creative energy to be around.”

Gurira told Self that the Rick and Michonne mini-series is set to begin filming in January, and that she found it exciting to help build the show from the ground up. I take it as a good sign that she has been so involved with the creative side of the show.
