Dan Harmon has confirmed that a Rick and Morty movie is officially in the works, with series veteran Jacob Hair in talks to direct. The news was first reported by The InSneider.
Rick and Morty Movie
When news of the movie started to leak, CinemaBlend was speaking with Harmon about the upcoming ninth season of Rick and Morty and was able to get him to confirm it.
“I got to go get a coffee (laughs). We saw the same leak, and we are therefore, now able to confirm that there is a movie in the works,” he said. “Jacob Hair is, is the director. I mean, we didn’t shop around. He is an absolute, to say rock star is honestly feels like trivializing it because that implies like some kind of flash in the pan, kind of exciting. I mean, Jacob has it like came onto our team. It was like adding a pillar to it.“
Hair has been a supervising director on the series for a number of years, helming episodes such as Rattlestar Ricklactica, The Vat of Acid Episode, and more.
The team has been talking about a possible movie for a while now, with Harmon mentioning in 2023 how he’d like to approach it. “My philosophy would be to just take a Rick and Morty adventure, and spend a bunch of extra money on it and make it 90 minutes long,” Harmon said at the time. “Not to try to earn its feature status by virtue of canonical dramatic tone shifts or anything like that, but rather to just make it a super badass episode of Rick and Morty.” He also met with Zack Snyder, who offered to help get the movie off the ground.
Rick and Morty Spinoff
The ninth season of the animated series is set to debut on May 24, but there’s also a spinoff in development, which will focus on President Curtis, the character voiced by the one and only Keith David.
David will reprise the role in President Curtis and will be joined by Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and Jim Rash (Community). The series “follows the Commander-in-Chief and his eccentric staff as they tackle the kind of crises that Rick Sanchez could never be bothered with – from interdimensional diplomacy to paranormal investigations and unexplained phenomena.” The spinoff series comes to us from Rick and Morty executive producers Dan Harmon and James Siciliano.
