Matt Reeves and Ridley Scott team up for vampire show The Passage

Growing up as a Goth, it always surprises people when I tell them I was never into vampires. I don't know why, but they just never really appealed to me. I enjoyed them when they were used well (like in INTERVIEW WITH A VAMPIRE), or in action films (like BLADE or UNDERWORLD); however, considering the vast amount of vampire fiction out there, that isn't saying much.

One of my favorite vampire films of all time, though, was LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, and even the Matt Reeves-directed American remake LET ME IN – while unnecessary – was still really good in its own right. So the prospect of a new vampire drama just got me a little more interested due to Reeves' involvement. Ridley Scott is also co-producing through his production company Scott Free, and while I've been lukewarm on his feature output as of late, his TV output (like the Tom Hardy FX series TABOO) have been pretty awesome.

Written by Liz Heldens (creator of CAMP and writer on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS), THE PASSAGE "begins as a character-driven government conspiracy thriller and morphs into a post-apocalyptic saga with vampires. The series spans over a century and focuses on a young girl named Amy who must save the human race."

Huh. I mean, I guess if you put enough cliched ideas (government conspiracies, post-apocalypse, vampires, a "chosen one") into a blender it becomes original again. The thing that catches my eye is "character-driven", which might be what sets this apart from the myriad of bad vampire dramas out there.

But what do you Schmoes think? You like vampires? And if so, what's your favorite vampire film/TV show/book?
