Although Kenneth V. Jones (usually credited as Ken Jones) only had three screen acting credits to his name, one of the roles he took on did make quite an impact. Genre fans might not have known his name off the top of their heads, but he was part of a scene that has been burned into the minds of everyone who has ever witnessed it.
In Don Coscarelli's 1979 classic PHANTASM (watch it HERE), Jones played the Caretaker, the character who was used to demonstrate to the audience exactly what those flying spheres can do when they attach to someone's head. Who could forget the sight of Jones with a sphere drilling into his face, spraying blood all over a mauseoleum floor? It's incredible, one of the most iconic moments in horror movie history.
Sadly, Jones passed away last Friday. Coscarelli shared the news on his Twitter account, posting the following message:
I'm sorry to report that Ken Jones, who starred in the most impactful scene in Phantasm, has passed away today. Everyone who came in contact with Ken loved him. He was warm, talented, and a devoted family man.
The fans loved meeting him in recent years at the conventions with his loving daughter Jennifer and grandson EJ by his side. Rest in peace, my friend.
Beyond PHANTASM, Jones played Mr. Soupy in Coscarelli's 1976 film KENNY & COMPANY, and appeared as a grocery store clerk in Jean Bodon's 1993 thriller HIDDEN FEARS.
