Rite to party at NL

Since THE EXORCIST, movies about exorcisms have been all the rage. Then in 2005 we were slapped with THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, an exorcism movie based on true events. That movie rocked my socks off, and it made some fairly decent bank at the box office… which means we’ve been seeing even more true-story exorcism movies since (AMERICAN HAUNTING comes immediately to mind).

Where’s this going? You guessed it – another true-life exorcism movie – but this time, with a twist. The flick’s called THE RITE, based on the upcoming non-fiction novel by journalist Matt Baglio, and it follows Baglio as he was allowed to tag along with a young priest during months of training with a senior exorcist at a school affiliated with the Vatican.. That’s right, exorcist school!

New Line Cinema just picked up the distribution rights, although not much can be done to move forward until the pesky writers strike is over, as it must be adapted for the big screen. Plus, the book isn’t expected to be published until 2009! So yes…. it may be a few years until this puppy comes out.

Considering ‘the rage’ behind exorcist movies these, that should allow enough time for it to come out and feel fresh and original… that is, unless MORE movies of the same are made between now and then, and it’ll end up just feeling cliched and boring… Hmmm…

It may be a few years, but stick around for more on THE RITE as we hear it!
