Back in June, we heard tales of two different potential Roland Emmerich projects: One was a film adaptation of the Atari game ASTEROIDS, which seemed like the ultimate Roland Emmerich movie. (That is, if 2012 isn’t already the ultimate Emmerich movie.) The other was a hush-hush project called SINGULARITY, a film reportedly set up at Sony. So which of the two is first? It turns out the better question is, which of the two is real?
In an interview with Collider, Emmerich dismisses ASTEROIDS completely, indicating that he was never firmly attached to the thing. (While confirming that he was indeed approached.)
“I was very honored that they wanted to have me as a director, and I kind of liked the script very much, but at that time I was writing with my writing partner Harold Kloser a new script called Singularity and I opted for that.”
And where does SINGULARITY stand?
“We already got started, so we’re in pre-production and we probably will shoot end of March as it looks right now, and it takes place in the future 40 years from now. It’s like kind of this moment where computer technology is so advanced that we kind of—It’s the danger of losing control.”
Unfortunately, Emmerich doesn’t divulge more than that, other than to say that it’s not a disaster movie and he reckons it’s something people haven’t seen yet. To read further comments from the director, click right HERE.
Meanwhile, Emmerich’s new film, the Shakespearean drama ANONYMOUS, opens in October. Nothing blows up in that, I don’t think.
