Actors can say whatever they want in regards to roles they want. Whether they happen or not is beyond their control. But, when buzzworthy celebrities like Ronda Rousey name characters they would like to play, you better believe that not only will the Internet take notice but those in power will,too.
During her recent Reddit AMA, Rousey was asked which superhero she would like to play. Obviously, since comic book adaptations are hot right now and Rousey is a massive nerd who loves Pokemon, Sailor Moon, and more, she had an answer.
“A lot of the good ones have been taken, but I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel!”
Now, this is likely going to be a divisive comment since Rousey is not exactly known for her acting ability. Aside from roles in THE EXPENDABLES 3, ENTOURAGE, FURIOUS 7, and an upcoming biopic about her own life, Rousey does not have much to her resume. Marvel Studios is definitely looking for someone who could embody a well-rounded take on Carol Danvers, but I am not sure if Ronda Rousey is quite that person.
If anything, Rousey's comments are similar to Katee Sackhoff's comments about the same role. Both Rousey and Sackhoff are good physical matches for the role, but I think CAPTAIN MARVEL needs a better actress for the part. There is still plenty of time for Marvel to make their choice and by the time they do, Rousey's popularity may have waned so don't hold your breath for an announcement any time soon.
CAPTAIN MARVEL will hit theaters on November 2, 2018.
