THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 may not have been the sequel many were hoping for, but Sony is definitely planning on a lot more Spider-man in the next several years. With VENOM and THE SINISTER SIX already announced along with THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3, we should have no shortage of Peter Parker on the big screen. But, with director Marc Webb and star Andrew Garfield already talking about leaving after the third movie, speculation has begun as to who may take over the role after the third film.

British newspaper The Daily Star, while reporting on a new home purchased by Garfield and real life girlfriend Emma Stone, cited an executive at Sony’s Columbia Pictures who said the following.

“Andrew is already contracted to make two more films for release in 2015 and 2016. But we are looking to tie him to the role for as many as a further four pictures given the huge success the franchise is enjoying. The part is pretty much his for as long as he chooses.”

Okay, so stick with me here. We know THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 is slated for release om May 27, 2016 with a spin-off coming on May 4, 2018, but this is the first mention of anything in 2015. Rumor had THE SINISTER SIX filming early next year, so this could be a misquote, but the news that they want Garfield for 4 more films is news. There was always an assumption that Spider-man would appear in the spin-offs in some capacity, so those 4 films could be factoring in the villan-centric movies as well. But, with a slate like that, would Garfield even be able to make other, non-franchise movies?

Consider this a rumor for now, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony did everything they could to keep him on board. THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is now playing.
