It’s no secret that Ryan Gosling is getting his ass handed to him in Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest, ONLY GOD FORGIVES. Our last peek at the hard-core revenge thriller came in the form of a few behind-the-scenes photos of Gosling looking quite the worse for wear. Now we have a new, somewhat more “official” image of the handsome devil with his face pummeled in, which you can stare at below.
Courtesy of the Film Stage, this promo still from the film presumably comes from the American Film Market and makes Gosling appear as though he just came back from a brutal night at the Fight Club. Say what you want about the actor, he consistently works to subvert his “pretty boy” image. (Can we all pretend THE NOTEBOOK didn’t happen?)
Opening at some point next year, ONLY GOD FORGIVES goes like this:
Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty.
When Julian’s brother murders a prostitute, the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand.
Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’.
