Sadako is coming back to bring more horror into the world. Mantan-Web broke the news (and Anime News Network handled the translation) that a new entry in the Ring / Ringu franchise is in the works and will be released in Japan sometime this fall. The new film is titled Sadako DX and will star Fuka Koshiba (Mokomi).
Hisashi Kimura (The Chef Is a Detective) is directing Sadako DX from a screenplay written by Yuya Takahashi, who has previously worked on multiple Kamen Rider Projects. The story Takahashi has crafted for this new Ring sequel sees Koshiba taking on the role of
Fuka Ichijo, a college student with 200 IQ who tries to unravel the curse of Sadako.

This franchise started out with a series of horror novels written by Koji Suzuki. Suzuki’s writing has inspired eight Japanese films (including a crossover with Ju-on / The Grudge), two TV shows, six manga adaptations, three English-language films, a Korean film, and two video games. There are also a few Chinese films that involve Sadako, but apparently aren’t considered to be an official extension of the series.
The only movies I have seen in this franchise are the original Ringu, the Korean remake The Ring Virus, and the American remake The Ring. While I was fine watching different versions of that one story, I never wanted to watch sequels or prequels or know any further information. That way it could remain a perfect standalone story in my mind. But as the franchise continues to grow, I’m getting tempted to take a look at some of the other installments. I’m still not sure if I should or not.
