The great men and women of the MPAA have descended from the mountaintop to bequeath another movie with an official rating. For they are wise…

On deck this time is the Sam Raimi-produced POSSESSION, formerly known as DIBBUK BOX. Directed by Ole Bornedal (NIGHTWATCH), the flick stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick.

THE POSSESSION has been given an R rating for violence, terror and disturbing images. However, it should be noted that Lionsgate is appealing the ruling, so they’re obviously aiming for a PG-13 here.

The film will follow Clyde Breneck and his 10-year-old daughter, Em, who purchases an antique box at a yard sale. With the box, Em accidentally releases an ancient spirit that has one goal: to devour her. Clyde must team work with his ex-wife to put an end to the curse.

THE POSSESSION comes out on JANUARY 6, 2012.
