Hollywood has been trying to develop an Amy Winehouse biopic for many years, but as musical biopics are all the rage right now, it’s time to pull the trigger. Deadline has reported that Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) has signed on to direct Back to Black.

Back to Black will explore the life and music of Amy Winehouse. The singer/songwriter started off as a budding Jazz singer in North London before becoming a Grammy-winning music superstar. Her albums Frank and Back in Black were big successes, but she battled drug addiction and alcoholism and ultimately died in 2011 at the age of 27. The Amy Winehouse biopic is being made with the full support of her estate and has been written by Matt Greenhalgh (Control). Sam Taylor-Johnson and the producers will soon begin their search for the perfect actress to take on the role.

This isn’t the first time that an Amy Winehouse biopic has been in the works, as Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) was once attached to star in a movie that didn’t move forward. Winehouse was also the subject of the 2015 A24 documentary Amy, which went on to win Best Documentary Feature at the 88th Academy Awards. Sam Taylor-Johnson most recently worked on Solos, an anthology series on Amazon Prime Video which stars Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, Anne Hathaway, Anthony Mackie, Dan Stevens, Uzo Aduba, and more. The series features seven unique character-driven stories, with each character setting off on a thrilling adventure in an uncertain future as they come to reckon that even during our most isolated moments, we are all connected through the human experience.

Who do you think should play Amy Winehouse in the upcoming biopic?
