Back at the end of May it was confirmed that there was a prequel to Ridley Scott’s ALIEN in the works. At that time Tony Scott said Carl Rinsch was going to direct. He lied.
Variety passes along the good word today that the ALIEN PREQUEL now has a writer and a director! Jon Spaihts has signed on to write with Ridley Scott directing. Yes… Ridley Scott… directing another ALIEN film! Is this as epic as it feels? I think it is. Variety doesn’t say much concerning Scott, just that he’s attached to return to the franchise as director and that it’s the first one in the franchise he’s wanted to direct since the original. The article concentrates more on Spaihts.
Apparently Spaihts pitched his idea for the prequel to Twentieth Century Fox and Tony and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free production company and was then offered the job. Apparently the writer has some experience with sci-fi flicks having penned the upcoming SHADOW 19 along with Keanu Reeves’ PASSENGERS. It was because of PASSENGERS that Spaihts got the meeting with Fox and Scott Free. He’s also attached to write a few other movies including Fox’s THE DARKEST HOUR, Disney’s CHILDREN OF MARS and Sony and Red Wagon’s ST. GEORGE AND THE DRAGON.
So could Spaihts’ pitch have been the thing to entice Ridley Scott to return as director? That’s a very good chance considering Scott loved it! No word yet on exactly what this prequel will be about but we’ll definitely keep you updated!
I don’t think Sigourney Weaver’s ‘Ellen Ripley’ will be making a return.
