What’s your favorite scary movie? Or, rather, what’s your favorite Scream kill? But don’t answer just yet, because the directors of the upcoming sequel Scream 6 may have quite a few for you to choose from, as they have promised a “gritter and rawer” entry than last year’s Scream.

In a new interview with NME, co-director Tyler Gillett said the previous Scream had to lay the groundwork for the sixth installment to work successfully. “Part of our assignment on Scream 5 was to play the greatest hits, to really show that we were part of a long lineage of characters…With Scream VI we wanted to subvert that warm blanket, and make something that’s grittier and rawer.”

Co-director Matt Bettinelli-Olpin added to this, saying, Scream 6 “is definitely more brazen and more aggressive than the last one. So, you know, wink-wink, there’s a body count in this one…” This is about the body count in 2022’s Scream, which was on the franchise’s lower end.

On Scream 6, Gillett added, “It’s relentless and really visceral. There’s a lot more of Matt and I in this movie,” he said, referring to the style the duo presented in movies like Ready or Not and anthology flicks V/H/S and Southbound. “I think that we had to make Scream 5 in order to feel like we had permission to do this one. It has all of the ingredients, all of the things that we love about the franchise but it has an attitude that’s a little bit different. We think people are going to be really excited about it.”

Excitement is indeed building, as Scream 6 (officially Scream VI) arrives just one year after its predecessor, the shortest gap since the one between 1996’s Scream and 1997’s Scream 2. To up the stakes, the franchise will move the action to New York City–although horror fans know this isn’t necessarily a great ideaRefusing to pay the face of the franchise–no, not Ghostface, but Neve Campbell–the price she deserves could also prove fatal.

Scream 6 slashes its way to theaters on March 10th.
