Scream 7 to be directed by Christopher Landon!

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon has been in talks to direct the next Scream sequel, Scream 7

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Christopher Landon will be directing Scream 7! The Radio Silence team of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella remain attached to the project as executive producers. It’s not clear if Scream 2022 and Scream VI writers James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will be writing the script, or if Landon will be writing it himself. The scripting issue won’t be figured out until the writers strike ends.

The original article follows:

Earlier this year, at the Scream VI premiere, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett – the directors of both Scream 2022 and Scream VI – were asked about the possibility of a Scream 7 being made. They replied, “We hope (there will be a Scream 7). We want to be watching Scream movies, whether we’re involved or not, for the rest of our lives.” And as it turns out, they might not be at the helm of Scream 7 when it goes into production. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting have confirmed that Christopher Landon, director of the horror comedy slasher movies Freaky and Happy Death Day, has been in talks to direct the next Scream sequel!

It’s no surprise to hear that Scream 7 is in the works. Scream VI was a huge box office success, ending up with a worldwide total of $168,834,132… which is only around $4 million behind the franchise record holders, the original Scream ($173,046,640) and Scream 2 ($172,363,301). Of course, those numbers haven’t been adjusted for inflation, but Scream VI was a hit anyway.

Bloody Disgusting hears that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett wanted to direct the next sequel, but they’ve gotten wrapped up in the making of their Universal Monster movie (a project that was once known as Dracula’s Daughter). Filming was underway, but has been impacted by the Screen Actors Guild strike.

Although Paramount and Spyglass haven’t officially announced Scream 7 yet, they’re probably wanting to get rolling on it as soon as possible – after all, there were only fourteen months between the releases of Scream (2022) and Scream VI. So with the directors of the previous two movies busy at Universal, they were talking to Landon about taking over Scream 7.

Now Hollywood is at a standstill due to the simultaneous writers strike and SAG strike, so we’ll have to wait and see how it will all shake out once the strikes are over.

Would you like to see Christopher Landon take the helm of Scream 7, or would you prefer that Paramount and Spyglass wait until Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett can direct the film? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

I loved Freaky and Happy Death Day, so I’m very open to the idea of a Landon-directed Scream.
