Screenwriter says The Legend of Conan is dead, Schwarzenegger disagrees

Last Updated on August 2, 2021

News has been quiet regarding the third Conan film THE LEGEND OF CONAN ever since we brought you the news screenwriter Chris Morgan said the film would be "a worthy sequel" back in August.

Well, today we have some further news as Morgan recently stopped by EW to discuss his new film THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS and the conversation eventually turned towards updates on THE LEGEND OF CONAN. Morgan went on to tell EW that the "studio decided they weren't gonna make it."

Chris Morgan on if THE LEGEND OF CONAN is happening:

Not so much. That’s kind of a longer story. At the end of the day, the studio decided that they weren’t gonna make that. I gotta say, it’s honestly a heartbreak. I love that first movie so much, so much, it’s one of my favorite movies. We had Will Beall do a draft on [the Legend of Conan script]. He killed it. Our take was Conan, 30 years later, a story like the Clint Eastwood Unforgiven. It was so awesome. Ultimately, the budget was big, the studio was not really sure of the title, and the relevance in the marketplace. They ended up letting it go. I think they’re gonna look to do a TV show or something with it. But just to be associated with it, pitch it to Arnold, have him get so excited, there was a moment of magic for me, personally [laughs]. You never know, down the road we may revisit!

Well, that sucks. However, Arnold Schwarzenegger was recently talking with Yahoo! in regards to his new film AFTERMATH and spoke about a third Conan movie still "being on his radar".

Arnold Schwarzenegger on THE LEGEND OF CONAN:

Yes. But those things are always complicated, because all of a sudden the rights are being sold to the “Conan” name, and the Robert E. Howard books. And then the question becomes, what is public domain, and what is not? So there’s all this debate. Two screenplays have been written, which means there are scripts that are available that are really good; they just have to be fine-tuned. As soon as they sort all that out, I think they can go and shoot a movie. But I would love to do another one, yes.

Well there you have it, the screenwriter says, "Not happening", but Conan himself says, "Not dead yet!" Which one do we believe? I don't know about you, but I'll go ahead and trust in The Destroyer.

We'll let you know when we hear more on THE LEGEND OF CONAN.

Rachel Nichols was the best thing about the CONAN remake.
