In 1999, Denzel Washington and Angelia Jolie starred in THE BONE COLLECTOR, a serial killer film directed by Phillip Noyce and based on a novel by Jeffery Deaver. Nineteen years later, NBC has announced that they are now developing a The Bone Collector television series.

In the film, Washington played

Lincoln Rhyme, a retired genius forensic criminologist left paralyzed after an accident on the job. When a harrowing case brings him back to the force, Rhyme partners up with an ambitious young detective, Amelia Sachs (Jolie), to take down some of the most dangerous criminals in the U.S.

While it would seem odd if NBC were just choosing to turn a nineteen year old movie that is barely remembered into a series, this decision makes more sense when you take into account that Deaver's novel was just the first in a series of books about the Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs characters. To date, there are fourteen books in the series, and one or both of the characters turned up briefly in an installment of a spin-off series Deaver writes about a character named Kathryn Dance.

So Deaver has already provided the show with plenty of material to base episodes on, and it even comes with built-in spin-off potential.

The Bone Collector TV show is coming to us from Universal Television and Sony Pictures Television, in association with Keshet Studios. VJ Boyd and Mark Bianculli are writing the pilot episode and will executive produce the series with Avi Nir, Alon Shtruzman, Peter Traugott, and Rachel Kaplan.
