Shawn Levy to direct Melissa McCarthy in a comedy version of Tinkerbell

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Melissa McCarthy is the female version of Kevin Hart: either you love her or you really, really f*cking hate her. Aside from a break-out supporting role in BRIDESMAIDS, McCarthy has managed to essentially play the same role over and over again in movies like THE HEAT and TAMMY. After a while, the schtick gets old and then you enter the Adam Sandler/Jim Carrey realm of safe, family films.

On that note, McCarthy has teamed with NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM director Shawn Levy to develop a comedy-adventure film at 20th Century Fox based on the Peter Pan character of Tinkerbell. The film will be directed by Levy from a script being written by Nicholas Stoller. Calling it a “fresh take”, no further details were provided as to what will set this take on Tinkerbell apart from prior versions aside from the fact that she won’t look like a Barbie doll in this version.

There is comedy to be mined here, but if Melissa McCarthy is simply going to make this a “oh, look! Tinkerbell is fat!” movie then it is not worth the price of admission. The funny fat man shtick is dated, but I do have some faith in Stoller being involved since FORGETTING SARAH MARSHALL and THE MUPPETS were both movies I enjoyed.

Shawn Levy has several projects on his slate such as the MINECRAFT film and 40 THIEVES, so it is unclear when this Tinkerbell movie will be made, but expect more news as it develops.
