Having previously worked together on the 2019 film Villains (watch it HERE), genre regular Maika Monroe and the writing / directing duo of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen are teaming up again for the sci-fi thriller Significant Other. Joining Monroe in the cast is Jake Lacy of the HBO limited series The White Lotus.

Plot details on Significant Other are being kept under wraps, but whatever the story Berk and Olsen have crafted this time around happens to be, it was interesting enough to studio executives that it ignited a “heated bidding war”. Paramount Players came out the winner of that bidding war and they intend to put the project on the fast track to production. The finished film will be released through the Paramount Plus streaming service.

Since we don’t have a synopsis for Significant Other, here’s the synopsis for Villains:

Mickey and Jules are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.

Monroe’s previous genre credits include the Quibi series The Stranger, Tau, Independence Day: Resurgence, It Follows, The Guest, Flying Monkeys, and Bad Blood.

Berk and Olsen made their feature writing and directing debut with the 2015 film Body, and went on to direct the Stake Land sequel The Stakelander and write the Dolph Lundgren / Mike Mendez film Don’t Kill It before making Villains. In addition to Significant Other, they’re also planning to make an original horror film for Amblin, writing two projects for Star Thrower, and developing an adaptation of Charles Pellegrino’s ecological horror novel Dust for Village Roadshow.

We’ll keep you updated as more information on Significant Other is revealed.
