Simon Pegg says Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek film could still happen

Ever since STAR TREK BEYOND released in theaters three years ago, the state of the film franchise has been more in flux than a wonky warp core. First actor Anton Yelchin who played Pavel Chekov died tragically. Then a fourth film involving a time travel storyline between Chris Pine's James Kirk and Chris Hemsworth's George Kirk fell apart over salary concerns. Most recently writer/director Noah Hawley was brought on board to helm the next film, despite only having directed 2019's poorly received LUCY IN THE SKY.

One of the more intriguing prospects since 2016's STAR TREK BEYOND hit theaters, was the idea of director Quentin Tarantino sitting in the captain's chair. The PULP FICTION director is an unabashed fan of the franchise and expressed interest in directing an R-rated version of the show that made Gene Roddenberry famous. Much to the disappointment of Tarantino and Star Trek fans, the erstwhile director recently indicated that there had been no movement on the project and he'd had no recent meetings with Paramount. However, Tarantino's involvement may not have been photon torpedoed yet, at least according to Simon Pegg.

Pegg, who plays ship engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the rebooted franchise, recently addressed the future of STAR TREK in an interview with Gold Derby. Of Tarantino's involvement, Pegg had this to say:

As far as I know, Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek idea is still kind of in the mix. That’s down to [him] about what he wants to do next, you know. There’s been talk of various spinoffs possibly. We’ll see. I’m always happy to get back into that universe. I think it’ll be bittersweet for us now to do another one after losing Anton [Yelchin], just because we were very much a family. And we’ll miss him more than we normally do, because he will be conspicuous by his absence. But we’ll see what happens.

While I'm not one to say "never" when it comes to Hollywood, I feel like Pegg's words may be wishful thinking. I have no doubt that Tarantino probably has an awesome idea for a movie, but the director is notoriously fluid when it comes to potential projects. Among other things, Quentin Tarantino's discussed writing and directing a television show, penning plays and novels, attacking a third KILL BILL movie, and completing his tenth and final film. Nevertheless, it appears as though Pegg is "givin' her all she's got" when it comes to championing Tarantino for the project.

Before Pegg slips back on his red Starfleet uniform, he's got the thriller INHERITANCE due out soon and is set to start filming the seventh and eighth MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE films next summer alongside Tom Cruise. Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino's ONCE UPON A TIME…IN HOLLYWOOD is currently out on home video and is garnering a ton of Oscar buzz.
