OK, OK, we all know that SIN CITY isn’t what you’re typically going to find coverage on here, even though it is dark and gritty and features lots of hot chicks. It just doesn’t quite pass muster as genre work. But you know what? Who cares! First of all, check out this trailer that hit the other day, and tell me if there’s any way you’re not going to see this flick. If so, then I don’t want to know you.
And there’s also the kick ass final poster that you can check out here. Is there anything about this project that doesn’t rock! No (I’m not even getting into the cast because it’s just too perfect and I might explode from joy)!
But the real reason I’m jawing at you today about SIN CITY is so that I can share with you some tidbits from an interview with co-director Frank Miller that Sci-Fi Wire posted. I mean, finding an example of true artistic integrity is hard enough in Hollywood, and then to find someone who also seems to lack ego, pride, or anything other than the desire to be fair and create good work…well it seems like it just doesn’t happen. Unless you’re talking about Robert Rodriguez.
Miller had this to say about working with the dude: “There were two points in my process as a director. One of them was when Robert first said, ‘Come on, jump in.’ And then he said, ‘What do you want to direct?'”
“At first we were talking about directing different segments” of Sin City. Then [Rodriguez] just shook his head at one point and said, ‘I need you every day, and also I don’t want to hang you out to dry. So why don’t we just co-direct the whole way through?’ I went ‘Cool.’ Talk about going to school. It was great. Later, the Director’s Guild gave him some trouble and said I couldn’t get credit. Robert and I were in his office, and he said, ‘Well, Frank, maybe I’ll give you sole credit.’ I said, ‘Robert, I can’t take that. We’re co-directors. I’m not going to take your credit.’ And he said, ‘I guess I’ll just quit the Director’s Guild’ [which he did]. I mean, what a mensch.”
Mensch? I’m afraid that doesn’t quite cut it. We’re talking damn near sainthood. I’ve been a fan of Rodriguez since the beginning, and the guy continues to impress me. It’s great when the Hollywood elite get together for charity balls, or rescue people with their boats and helicopters, but how many have the cajones and the decency to stand on their principles without blinking an eye? Not to grandstand, but just because it’s the right thing to do.
I don’t want to get over dramatic here, but this is the type of guy that my kid is going to have as a celebrity role model. Well done Robert! Well done.
