By now we all know that Steven Spielberg and Will Smith are planning to bring an OLDBOY film to the US. Now fans are understandably in an uproar. Park Chan-wook’s OLDBOY was nearly perfect. So the idea of a duo like Will Smith and Steven Spielberg Americanizing this story does seem a bit… ridiculous. Ever since this was announced Smith has been hard at work in shooting down all the ridicule by stating how their film will be based off the OLDBOY comics, not Park’s film.
Well all’s good then. Wait… no. All is not good. It doesn’t matter if the Smith/Spielberg OLDBOY will be based off Park’s flick or the comic… fact is, it’s hard to imagine these guys going through with such a violent, controversial story. Well Smith is at it again, trying to put everyone’s minds at ease. He recently talked to MTV about what we can expect in the film in regards to the violent, twisted image the comics display:
“It’s the thing that Steven was attracted to. We’re working from the comic and we haven’t done anything other than talk about it. So we’ll see what happens, but he’s not going to do anything that would be less than stunning.”
Well that’s reassuring. Wait… no it isn’t. Don’t get me wrong. I believe Smith to be one of the best actors out there today and Spielberg is nothing short of legendary… but I just don’t see the two tackling a successful OLDBOY adaptation. Here’s hoping I’m wrong though, because imagine if this duo actually nail it? We’d be in for one heck of a movie…
