Could MGM’s financial woes finally be nearing an end? Variety reports that Sony has emerged as the as the “probable” distribution partner for MGM. Paramount, Warner Bros. and Fox are all out of the equation, so Sony is the last major studio standing. The studios haven’t commented on the deal, but a source says that the two are currently hammering out the specifics.

If the deal is sealed, not only will Sony be distributing the 23rd James Bond picture and some 4,000 DVD titles, but they will also gain Drew Goddard’s THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. The genre movie is complete and has been delayed indefinitely while MGM faces their monetary problems.

Perhaps we’ll even see THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES finally get released. The John Erick Dowdle film was completed back in 2007 and has been collecting dust on the shelf ever since. Most fans have lost hope at this point, but never say never.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but here’s to hoping 2011 is the year we’ll finally catch these flicks we’ve heard so much about!
