Oscar-winning writer-director Spike Lee is getting in league with Netflix. It has been announced that the filmmaker has signed a multi-year deal with the streamer.
Spike Lee previously collaborated with Netflix on the war drama Da 5 Bloods and back in 2020 and he also had other projects that were housed at the streamer. Per “Deadline“, Spike Lee entered into a creative partnership after the success of those projects, including the series She’s Gotta Have It, Rodney King, and See You Yesterday, which he produced. Spike Lee had this to say about the partnership:
“There Is No Better Way For Me And My Company 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks To Begin The New Year Than Renew Our Partnership With Ted, Scott And Tendo-Da Fearless Leaders Of NETFLIX. Besides My Joints, We Together Will Focus On The New Diverse Storytellers. YOUTH MUST BE SERVED. And Dat’s Da Truth, Ruth. YA-DIG? SHO-NUFF.”
Netflix is the perfect home for someone like Spike Lee because his artistic freedom will be able to flourish there without much input from the platform. Lee is still one of the most provocative directors working in the industry today so I’m excited for what he has in store at the streamer. I just rewatched 1989’s Do The Right Thing just last week and if you need a reminder of how powerful he is as a filmmaker, just give that movie another watch. You won’t regret it.
