Here’s a novel concept: An awards show for Horror/sci-fi films. We in Canada already have something small like that (The Spacey’s), but now SpikeTV (which has gone into overdrive with the BLADE TV series promos) looks to do one of their own.
According to Yahoo! Movies (which got the scoop from Reuters), the ‘First Network For Men’ will launch ‘Scream 2006’ in October, with the event being taped sometime in September in or around the Los Angeles area. SpikeTV is no stranger to awards shows directed at a niche audience, since it debuted its video game awards show a few years back.
“There is so much to celebrate when you look to recent box office successes from SILENT HILL and SCARY MOVIE 4 to television’s LOST,” says Casey Patterson, senior vp event production and talent development at Spike TV. ‘Scream’ will honor the best in film, TV, video games, comic books and music with a mix of serious awards for outstanding past and present people or programing to such light categories as ‘highest body count in a movie’ and ‘best blood-curdling scream’.”
This is a welcome alternative (in my opinion) to MTV’s Movie Awards, which are obviously chosen by people who know nothing of horror movies when it comes to catagories such as Best Villain or Best Frightened Performance. Granted, SpikeTV’s video game awards started out kind of rough (read: ass-kissing to sponsors and some ‘out there’ winners), but it’s settled down to become a cool show (and doesn’t involve Jimmy Fallon making an ass of himself). I can’t wait.
