Variety reports that Sly Stallone himself will take the helm on biopic POE, from a screenplay he wrote. Script has been done since 2002, but the production deal didn’t get finalized until this week.
Not surprisingly, given Edgar Allan Poe’s life history of drug abuse, madness and general depression, Robert Downey Jr. is Stallone’s first pick for the title role. Perhaps ending up dead in a gutter on screen would help Downey continue? to stay clean.
Hard to imagine this as a straight ahead genre pic, but at the same time, any exploration of Poe’s drug fueled creative process has got to get pretty intense. Here’s hoping they repect the horror in Poe’s story.
Regardless, you can keep your Alexander The Great’s and your Howard Hughes’ – I’ll take a shot of Poe anyday!
