Last Updated on August 2, 2021

Shooting will begin early next year on RAMBO: LAST BLOOD star Sylvester Stallone's new thriller SAMARITAN. And today we're hearing via Deadline that the film has found its director in the form of J.J. Abrams' WWII horror flick OVERLORD filmmaker Julius Avery.

Avery said in a statement:

Sly is a hero of mine, I’m incredibly thrilled to be working with such an iconic actor on this very special project with Balboa Productions and MGM.

Described as "a dark, fresh take on the superhero genre" and based on an idea by ESCAPE ROOM screenwriter Bragi F. Schut, the film centers on

A young boy who is out to discover if a mythic superhero, who vanished 20 years earlier following a tragic event, is still alive.

Braden Aftergood will produce the film and Schut will serve as an executive producer.

For those who missed the action-horror movie last year, Julius Avery's OVERLORD begins

On the eve of D-Day, American paratroopers drop behind enemy lines to penetrate the walls of a fortified church and destroy a radio transmitter. As the soldiers approach their target, they soon begin to realize that there's more going on in the Nazi-occupied village than a simple military operation. Making their way to an underground lab, the outnumbered men stumble upon a sinister experiment that forces them into a vicious battle against an army of the undead.

The sci-fi-action-horror film was produced by J.J. Abrams and directed by Julius Avery (SON OF A GUN) from a screenplay written by Billy Ray (THE HUNGER GAMES) and Mark L. Smith (THE REVENANT). The film stars Wyatt Russell, Bokeem Woodbine, Jovan Adepo, Jacob Anderson, Dominic Applewhite, Pilou Asbaek, Iain de Caestecker, John Magaro, and Mathilde Ollivier.
