Star Trek Beyond’s Sulu revealed to be gay in honor of George Takei

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

Star Trek fan or no, we all love George Takei and his contributions to not only the Trek legacy, but to spreading awareness and acceptance in the faces of those who have frowned upon same-sex relationships. Yes, it’s no secret that Takei is as gay as the day is long, and while the topic has never really been brought up as far as his character Hikaru Sulu goes, it looks like the senior helmsman will follow suit. In speaking with the Herald Sun, John Cho mentioned that Sulu will be revealed to be the father of a daughter with a same sex partner in STAR TREK BEYOND.

John Cho on Sulu’s sexual orientation:

I liked the approach, which was not to make a big thing out it, which is where I hope we are going as a species, to not politicize one’s personal orientations.

Star Trek has always presented audiences with a future society that strives to work towards universal acceptance in order to maintain peace throughout the galaxy. The shows, in particular, have done such a great job of whipping in a little message within the entertainment. While something like this comes as little shock (especially given the character), it’s still a nice way to honor the original actor and his fight for equality.

STAR TREK BEYOND will open in theaters on July 22, 2016.
