Star Trek: Discovery travels to the future in new season three trailer

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Today is CBS All Access' virtual Star Trek Day celebration, and the new trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Discovery was unveiled during the series' panel earlier today. Picking up where the second season left off, the new season will find Commander Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery flung into the far future where they must work together to restore the Federation. It's a big departure for the series whose first two seasons took place just years before the events of The Original Series, but I hope it will be a good move and let the show chart its own path without having to adhere to the history of their original era.

In addition to Sonequa Martin-Green, the third season of Star Trek Discovery also stars Doug Jones (Commander Saru), Anthony Rapp (Lt. Commander Paul Stamets), Mary Wiseman (Ensign Sylvia Tilly), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), Michelle Yeoh (Philippa Georgiou), as well as new additions to the franchise in David Ajala (Cleveland “Book” Booker), Blu del Barrio (Adira), and Ian Alexander (Gray). The new season of Star Trek: Discovery will consist of thirteen episodes and will debut on CBS All Access on October 15, 2020.

The official synopsis for the third season of Star Trek: Discovery:

After following Commander Burnham into the wormhole in the second season finale, season three of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY finds the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery landing in an unknown future far from the home they once knew. Now living in a time filled with uncertainty, the U.S.S. Discovery crew, along with the help of some new friends, must work together to restore hope to the Federation.

In addition to the third season of Star Trek: Discovery, there's plenty more Star Trek to look forward to, including the first season of Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy series from Rick & Morty's Mike McMahan; Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, a spin-off series featuring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Number One, and Ethan Peck as Spock; a Section 31 series starring Michelle Yeoh; Star Trek: Prodigy, a CG-animated series aimed at younger audiences; and a second season of Star Trek: Picard.
