It was announced yesterday that Charlie Hunnam was bringing the Sons of Anarchy cast back together for a meta-spinoff titled Legends, but one name wasn’t mentioned: the man who created the original series, Kurt Sutter.

The report stated that Sutter would not be involved in Legends, and he has since taken to Instagram to give his two cents on the project.

I know the news about Charlie’s show hit today, and I’m beginning to get some queries about it,” he said. “I just want to say my piece. I’m not involved with Legends at all — nor should I be. It has nothing to do with the characters I created, or the mythology. It’s really about the show and the legacy of the show, and, quite frankly, there are thousands of people who are responsible for that legacy.

He continued, “I just want folks to know that Charlie came to me when he was in the process of pitching this to the network to ask for my blessing, knowing that the IP would probably not be able to be invoked for various reasons of legalese stuff. I gave Charlie my full blessing. I wish nothing but the best for him in this project. My wife [star Katey Sagal] is in the project. I have nothing but love for [FX Networks chairman] John Landgraf and the folks at FX who have been so good to me, so generous. So it has my full-blown support.

Sutter then teased that he thinks fans will really enjoy Legends. “Watch this motherf***er, because I’ve taken a peek at the script that was perhaps just lying on my wife’s knitting table, and it’s really so well done. I think you’ll dig it. I love Charlie to death, and I think you will have mad love for this project as well.

After Sons of Anarchy, Sutter co-created the spinoff series Mayans M.C. with Elgin James, but he was fired by FX following multiple complaints about his “abrasive” and “unprofessional” behaviour.

Legends

The logline reads: “When the cast of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ reunites at a fan convention after more than a decade, the line between life and art blurs as the fractured brotherhood finds itself up against a real-world threat more dangerous than anything they ever faced in their show.

Hunnam will star in Legends alongside Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates, and Theo Rossi. Additional members of the cast will be announced in the coming weeks, so perhaps we’ll see even more Sons of Anarchy actors sign on.

Legends is developed and executive-produced by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel, and Jackie Cohn also serving as executive producers. FX Productions and 20th Television will produce the series, which will stream on FX and Hulu.

In a statement, Nick Grad, FX Entertainment President, said, “When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision. Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.
