FX and Disney part ways with Kurt Sutter due to on set temper tantrums

Kurt Sutter, Sons of Anarchy, Mayans

Following "multiple complaints" over his on set temper tantrums, FX, and now, Disney, have told THE MAYANS M.C. showrunner, Kurt Sutter, to hit the road and don't look back. Sutter recently penned an open letter to the cast and crew of the SONS OF ANARCHY spinoff, in which he explains that he was fired by Disney TV Studios and ABC Entertainment chairman Dana Walden and FX CEO John Landgraf for essentially, in his own words, being an "abrasive dick." Sutter's firing comes after the companies launched an investigation into Sutter's past dealings, as well as his storied behavior on the set of Mayans spinoff..

You can read Sutter's full letter below, and then we'll double back from there:

Dear Team Mayans,

Apparently, Disney HR and Business Affairs has conducted an investigation into the unacceptable conditions that have been created on the set of Mayans in season 2. As you know, I’ve removed myself quite a bit this season, allowing others to take a bigger role in producing the show. It appears that philosophy has backfired. It’s been reported by writers, producers, cast and crew that my absence and subsequent behavior when there, has only created confusion, chaos, hostility and is perceived as abandonment. Or at least that’s how Disney has interpreted it. I’m sure it’s true.

This morning I was fired by Dana Walden and John Landgraf for all the complaints levied against me. Not the way I wanted to end my 18 year relationship with FX. At least being fired for being an abrasive dick is on brand.

I deeply apologize if I’ve made people feel less than or unsupported. My intention was literally the opposite. But clearly I’ve not been paying attention. My arrogance and chronic distraction has created wreckage. Just know, I adore this cast and crew.

I’m not sure what the fate of Mayans MC holds. But if it continues, you’ll still be in good hands. As I said at the premier, Elgin is ready to take on the challenge of running the show. I’m sure FX will get him the support he needs to find and follow his vision.

For those of you who wanted me gone, you win! For those of you who didn’t, you win too. Although I will no longer be involved, I have no doubt the new team will move things forward with the same quality fans have come to expect.

Thank you for the honor of working with all of you.

I don’t need, nor want, replies or condolences. I know where the love is. And for those of you who have it, I’m sure our paths will cross again.

Best,

ks

Regardless of Sutter's falling out, his overall arrangement with 20th Century Fox TV has yet to be affected. The aforementioned union was established back in January of 2018. Since the release of Sutter's letter, representatives from neither FX nor 20th Century Fox TV have failed to comment on the fallout. It would also appear as if Sutter's message to those he holds dear will be his only word on the matter, at least for the time being. Notoriously known for being difficult on set and beyond, Sutter's outbursts have ranged from him berating executives to throwing a hissy about the budgetary constraints of his Mayans M.C. project.

What's interesting to me is that Sutter has openly addressed his temper in the past, though it appears as if he's done nothing to change the trajectory of his behavior. If you're willfully difficult, and fail to augment your energy for the benefit of your cast and crew, what does that make you?

The Mayans M.C., created by Sutter and Elgin James, is currently on the road with for its second season on FX. The decision to renew the series for a third roadtrip has yet to be determined, though I'd be very surprised if the show continues without some major changes. For the moment, Sutter has already relinquished his hold on the show as its showrunner, and has passed that duty onto James. Should the show return, James will act as showrunner going forward.
