Star Trek’s Picard spinoff producer details the show’s ‘different’ tone

In addition to launching the upcoming second season of STAR TREK: DISCOVERY this coming January on CBS All Access, the beloved space exploration franchise is busy readying a new spinoff series, which will see the long-awaited return of fan-favorite character Jean-Luc Picard, as played by Star Trek royalty, Sir Patrick Stewart.

Recently, Picard spinoff writer-producer Alex Kurtzman spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the overall tone of the new series, and how it will boldly take the long-standing franchise to uncharted territory.

“It’s an extremely different rhythm than Discovery,” Kurtzman told EW exclusively. Discovery is a bullet. Picard is a very contemplative show. It will find a balance between the speed of Discovery and the nature of what Next Gen was but I believe it will have its own rhythm.”

Kurtzman then elaborated: “Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in Next Gen is really exciting. ‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery is also grounded. It will feel more … real world? If that’s the right way to put it.”

One thing we know for sure is that CBS's Picard spinoff is on the fast-track, with writer's working tirelessly to craft stories that will amaze and astound fans of the iconic character. “The writer’s room has broken about eight episodes and we’re moving quickly and I couldn’t be more excited about it,” said Kurtzman.

SEEMORE

As a casual STAR TREK fan, I must admit that even I'm extremely interested in the Picard spinoff. I figure that talented people have been dreaming up adventures starring the Captain of the starship USS Enterprise for generations, and now a select few of them will have the chance to share those stories with the masses. One thing's for sure, now is a very exciting time to be a STAR TREK enthusiast. So buckle up, have your Vulcan neck pinch armed and ready, and prepare to cruise the stars in style with a host of new Trek-related offerings in 2019.
