It was only a matter of time before this happened. Lucasfilm has announced the cancellation of their long-running animated series STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS. The series, which lasted five seasons and 100 episodes, aired on Cartoon Network. Now that Lucasfilm is owned by Disney, it only made sense to bring the animated properties in house to air on a Mouse-owned network like Disney XD or ABC Family.

According to the official press release:

While the studio is no longer producing new episodes for Cartoon Network, we’re continuing production on new Clone Wars story arcs that promise to be some of the most thrilling adventures ever seen. Stay tuned for more information on where fans can soon find this bonus content. In the video below, Supervising Director Dave Filoni offers a peek of what is to come in STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS.

It remains to be seen how fans will get the concluding stories in the series, either in the form of direct to Blu-ray releases or online distribution, but it appears the days of being on Cartoon Network are numbered. The release also states the Seth Green developed series STAR WARS: DETOURS has been put on hold indefinitely. So, what does this mean for the future of STAR WARS animation? Check out this intriguing mention:

We are exploring a whole new Star Wars series set in a time period previously untouched in Star Wars films or television programming. You can expect more details in the months to come.

My mind immediately jumped to KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC. I would think that the STAR WARS films will focus on the Skywalker legacy while the animated universe can expand to some more original aspects of the galaxy. What do you guys think?
