New Stargate series has been scrapped at Amazon

It was announced last year that a new Stargate TV series had been given a series order at Prime Video, but don’t dial up the gate just yet. Variety reports that the Stargate series has been scrapped at Amazon and will not move forward.

Why Was it Scrapped?

The new Stargate series was being developed by Martin Gero, who was a writer on Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis, and Stargate Universe. So, he knew the franchise inside and out, but according to the report, that might have been a problem.

According to a person familiar with the situation, Amazon executives were “concerned that Gero’s take on the series would not have broad appeal beyond the franchise’s already dedicated fanbase.

For fans, that obviously doesn’t sound like a bad thing, but Amazon clearly wants the series to have broader appeal and attract new fans. I would argue that you can do both. Stay faithful to the stories and characters that already exist, while also doing something new. Literally, the entire universe is at your disposal.

A few other OG Stargate creatives were involved, including Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi as consulting producers, and Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich as executive producers.

Plot details for Gero’s series haven’t been revealed, but I’d love to know what the concept was. Amazon is still exploring new ways to bring the franchise back, so I have no doubt we’ll be travelling through the gate again, one way or another. I foresee the company going full-on reboot, but I hope I’m wrong.

The Stargate Franchise

The franchise began in 1994 with the release of Stargate, directed by Roland Emmerich and written by Emmerich and Dean Devlin. It was a commercial success, and although there were plans for sequels, they never materialized. Instead, the concept was brought to the small screen with Stargate SG-1, which ran for 10 seasons and 2 direct-to-video movies. There was also Stargate Atlantis, which ran for 5 seasons, and Stargate Universe, which ran for 2 seasons. There was also Stargate Infinity, an animated series, but we don’t talk about that one.

What type of Stargate series would you like to see Amazon make?
