Stephen King’s Castle Rock: Hulu series cancelled after two seasons

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

The second season of the Stephen King-inspired Hulu series Castle Rock wrapped up in December of last year, and fans have been waiting eleven months to find out whether or not the show is going to continue. Now word has finally come out that there will not be a season 3. Castle Rock is officially cancelled.

The anthology series was a Bad Robot and Warner Bros. Television production. A reason for the cancellation was not given, but it may be due to Warner Bros. shifting their focus to developing shows for the HBO Max streaming service. In fact, Bad Robot and Warner Bros. are currently working on another King-inspired show for HBO Max, Overlook Hotel.

Castle Rock told

an original story that combines the mythological scale and intimate character storytelling of King's best-loved works, weaving an epic saga of darkness and light, played out on a few square miles of Maine woodland.

The cast of season 1 included Melanie Lynskey, Jane Levy, Bill Skarsgård, Terry O'Quinn, Scott Glenn, André Holland, Sissy Spacek, and Chosen Jacobs. Season 2 starred Lizzy Caplan, Tim Robbins, Paul Sparks, Elsie Fisher, Yusra Warsam, Barkhad Abdi, Matthew Alan, John Hoogenakker, Robin Weigert, Sarah Gadon, Alison Wright, and Greg Grunberg.

The show was executive produced by Sam Shaw, Dustin Thomason, J.J. Abrams, Ben Stephenson, Vince Calandra, Liz Glotzer, and Stephen King.

I have yet to watch any of Castle Rock myself. I intend to get around to the show at some point, but I was never very enthusiastic about the idea of writers crafting their own stories that happen to be set in Castle Rock. If the show was a blended adaptation of the King stories set in the town, I would have watched it by now.
