The long battle to get an origin story for Jack Ryan might have found it’s victor in Steve Zaillian (SCHINDLER’S LIST, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE).
The newest take on Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan has been tossed about from writer to writer. First Hossein Amini (THE FOUR FEATHERS) got a chance and ultimately that ended in fail. Then Paramount got their hands on an original spec script titled DUBAI that was written by Adam Cozad. That script was redrafted to be the relaunch of Jack Ryan. Anthony Peckham (SHERLOCK HOLMES) came on at one point to try his luck, then it went back to Cozad. Now, Zaillian will put his own polish on the script.
Zaillian knows his way around the character of Jack Ryan. He did the script for Harrison’s Ryan in CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER. Apparently he also did an uncredited re-write on PATRIOT GAMES.
The project is being called MOSCOW and has no official title or start date. The story is an original and not based on any of Clancy’s books. Deadline says that the story has to do with, “a terrifying helicopter crash that nearly killed Ryan when he was a 23-year old platoon leader in the US Marines. He was the only member of the platoon to survive.” Chris Pine will be the new Ryan with Jack Bender (LOST) helming.
