Stranger Things season 5 will have a time jump, Duffers are stressed about the ending

Back in February, the Netflix streaming service announced that Stranger Things will be wrapping up its run with season 5. As the July 1st premiere date of the final episodes of season 4 draws closer, TV Line caught up with the show’s creators Ross and Matt Duffer (a.k.a. The Duffer Brothers) to see what sort of information they could get on Stranger Things season 5 at this time.

Matt Duffer said they don’t know when season 5 will begin filming, but much of the story is already mapped out.

We learn a lot every time we make a [season]. We’ve learned a lot just working with all of our new actors and the ones that we’ve worked with for a long time over this year [making Season 4], so I’m sure it’ll change a little bit from that outline. The ending is the hard thing. That’s obviously the stressful thing. We really want to stick the landing.”

Ross Duffer added that they’ll probably have a “time jump” at the start of season 5, since the young actors that are the leads of Stranger Things have grown up so much since the show began.

Ideally, we’d have shot [Seasons 4 and 5] back to back, but there was just no feasible way to do that. So these are all discussions we’re going to have with our writers when we start the room up. Believe it or not, we’re still working on Season 4. We’re trying to finish [post-production on] the final two episodes, they’re so massive.”

There have been time jumps between every season of Stranger Things – season 1 took place in November 1983, season 2 in October 1984, season 3 in July 1985, season 4 in March 1986 – but it sounds like the season 5 time jump could be more substantial. Since six years have passed since the show began, it’s difficult to believe that only two and half years have passed in the reality of the show. Those little kids have become adults over the course of the seasons.
