Superman villain Brainiac cast in upcoming SyFy drama Krypton!

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

So KRYPTON is an idea that sounds like a fun comic-book one-off. I'd actually be interested in seeing the way technology works, the society, the different political houses, etc. Hell, focusing on a Krypton flashback was the basis of a really good SUPERMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES episode, and the El's were always pretty badass anyway.

However, a whole show based on them? And not even Jor-El, but his father? That seems…iffy. What the show does have going for it, though, is the references to Superman's comic-book history, such as the main characters living on Kandor. They are also casting a major villain with connections to both Krypton and Superman on the show – Brainiac. He'll be played by Blake Ritson from DA VINCI'S DEMONS.

Now, I've been harsh on KRYPTON, and to be fair, SMALLVILLE (another Superman prequel show) had a few good years before it became unwatchable (where James Marsters played a shape-shifting version of the character). Not only that, but CAPRICA – which was also based on the grandfather one of the main characters from BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (another SyFy show KRYPTON seems to aping stylistically) – was vastly underrated (if indeed flawed). So the show's not DOA, but it does have a lot to prove.

Anyway, here's the official synopsis:

Based on DC characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Krypton is set two generations before the destruction of the legendary Man of Steel’s home planet. It follows Superman’s grandfather (Cameron Cuffe) — whose House of El was ostracized and shamed — as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.

Meanwhile, KRYPTON will blow up on SyFy sometime next year.
